Two Semesters with HKUMed students

The second-year medical students from the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine have just completed their elective course, “Teen Pregnancies in Hong Kong”. Over the past two semesters, we participated in lectures and tutorials, and guided the students in our activities, such as outreach at nightclubs, school workshops, and workshops on unplanned pregnancies.

As the course came to an end, the aspiring doctors shared their findings with us. They believe that inadequate sexuality education in Hong Kong has led to a lack of sexual knowledge among teens. They also recognized that both young women in the sex industry and those experiencing unplanned pregnancies are vulnerable groups in society, deserving of non-judgmental care from healthcare professionals.

We often hear from young women who have experienced unplanned pregnancies about feeling criticized by healthcare professionals for being “immature” or facing questioning about their decisions to terminate a pregnancy. As this course wraps up, we bid farewell to everyone and hope that you all become compassionate healthcare professionals who communicate with patients in a non-judgmental manner in the future!
