Create Safe Spaces for Teens

“How can we create a safe space for teenagers to talk about sexuality and gender issues?” This is not just a question we think about all the time—it is something that often crosses the minds of anyone working with young people.

When mentors from Teach Unlimited Foundation were working in schools, they noticed that many students did not know how to handle intimate relationships. To address this, they invited us to hold a customized Gender Awareness Training session for them. Using the “Run for Consent” board game as a tool, we facilitated a conversation about how to create a safe and supportive space where teenagers feel comfortable asking questions about sexuality and gender-related issues.

The two key elements for starting these conversations are confidentiality and a non-judgmental approach. It can also be helpful for youth workers to share their own experiences when appropriate. Most importantly, teenagers often just need someone who will genuinely listen and simply be there for them. This is how meaningful communication can happen.
