Breaking the Silent Barriers in Sexuality Education

Sexuality education should have no barriers. Everyone deserves the right to understand their own body. Recently, Teen’s Key joined the “SignED: Inclusive Sex Education for Hong Kong Deaf Community,” co-organized by Free Periods Hong Kong and Deaf Classroom Hong Kong, and hosted a workshop titled “Body Adventure: The Reproductive System and Sexual Health.”

With the support of sign language interpreters, we guided participants—from secondary school students to individuals in their 60s—to debunk common myths about sex, explore how hormones affect emotions, and learn about orgasm and masturbation from a scientific perspective.

This workshop also gave our team an important chance to reflect on how to keep improving our teaching. We learned that for the Deaf community, text-heavy materials or videos with subtitles may not be the most effective tools. Visuals often help participants better grasp the content. In response, we adapted our teaching materials to include more images. This reminded us that truly inclusive education is not “one-size-fits-all,” but about meeting learners where they are. Going forward, we will continue our efforts to bring sexual knowledge to every community.
